The Leadership Ecosystem remains the same across levels

Unfold the Fundamentals to strengthen the base before adding more sophisticated layers to leadership,

The reason why an initiative becomes successful rests on the same fundamentals as those initiatives that fail.

Results...  or  No Progress?

An ecosystem out of sync delivers poor progress and results, if any.

Balance is the pre-requisite for teams to gain traction and deliver.

Stimulating the balance is on the shoulders of the Leader.

The 10-page guide provides an introduction to the Leadership Ecosystem,
and helps you assess the fundamentals of your initiative.

Avoid bias from distractions

With increasing amounts of distractions, a solid and fundamental model helps focus our thinking on what really matters when it comes to connection our objectives with the HOW.

A mental model

Repeated use of the same universal mental model helps accumulate learning from one initiative to the next, and continues growing with growing complexity of your initiatives.

Leader - you

It starts within yourself: Getting your team to follow you begins with your own picture of WHAT you aim to achieve.

Without a clear picture of WHAT you aim to achieve, you can never get the team to follow you.

Team - alignment

Don't assume your team to have exactly the same view as yourself.

Alignment sounds both obvious and easy, yet if parts of your team resists, disagrees, or has another perception of the direction, energy will be wasted, progress limited, and chances of success become limited.

Resources

The combination of time, people and money determines the team's ability to make progress.

More resources cannot compensate for lack of competencies.

Competencies

The right skills and competencies to drive progress on initiatives and projects are not a given in today's fast changing world.

Yet, they are crucial to shape the right progress. And they are crucial to continue developing.

As we navigate in constantly increasing change and information,
our Beliefs and Mental Models only become more important

A need to get back to the fundamentals

In leading projects and line organizations at international scale, I realized a need for understanding the underlying drivers or blockers behind successful and less sucessful initiatives.

Building on my passion for removing complexity and boiling things down to the real core, I found the rootcauses to be very fundamental to any aspect of leadership. Altogether they shape the Leadership Ecosystem.

Removing the noise and complexity from leadership is the first step in helping leaders focus on the few essentials that make or break initiatives.

If that core is not in place, more sophistication adds no value.

The Leadership Ecosystem - the origin of progress and impact

Our leadership challenges - at all levels - circle around 2 fundamental themes:

WHAT do we aim to achieve?
- and how to we bring consistency and clarity for ourselves, our peers, and our teams to move in that one single direction to achieve those results?

HOW to make it happen?
- by bringing the right competencies and resources into play.

Having these very fundamental elements in place solves so many other issues.

The Leadership Ecosystem is the mental model at the roots of any progress, and it remains my compass when navigating both known and unknown land and challenges.

Our Actions are rooted in our Beliefs

I've compiled my list of fundamental beliefs in leadership.

And while it may look like nice one-liner quotes to re-post somewhere, the real value of our beliefs is the meaning behind and the implications and consequences that we take on a daily basis.

All beliefs are explained - including the 2 examples here:

Mastering the Fundamentals of Leadership

My book is for leaders who dare to look in the mirror and reflect on things they can improve.

Next to unrolling the Leadership Ecosystem in detail, it touches upon the mindset of the leadership footprint aiming to both deliver results today while doing it in a way that helps teams develop to take on tomorrow.

Our leadership impact is rooted in
our beliefs and mental model

Our Mental Model

Results = Objectives x Actions

Let's face it: As leaders we do not make results.

Our teams do.

What we really do is to mange the circumstances that enable our teams to make things happen, which lead to results.

Our ongoing task is to connect WHAT we aim to achieve with enabling our teams to make it happen.

The Leadership Ecosystem as the mental model to continuously manage the circumstances that enable teams to make progress towards results.

We use the same mental model to connect strategy to actions, initiate new intiatives, and to get things back on track.

Our Leadership Beliefs

Our actions are steered by our beliefs: What we value, how we perceive our role, and what footprint we want to leave as a leader.

Our beliefs helps explain how we connect the logic behind leadership, and how consequences of different ways of thinking impact the results we aim to achieve.

It's these 'eternal truths' that seems right no matter the situation.

Mastering the Fundamentals of Leadership

The central theme of the book is to explain the Leadership Ecosystem in detail, along with the mindset of the ideal leadership footprint: Aiming to both deliver results today while doing it in a way that helps teams develop to take on tomorrow.

Going back to the fundamentals

After +15 years of leading international projects and line organizations I still had the desire to find answers to the same 2 questions that came to my mind when I was promoted into my first leadership role:

What is leadership all about?

How to do it?

The deep-dive into root causes behind progress and results was a journey of removing noise and complexity from leadership, and the essence of it all lead to the writing Leadership: Lesson One.

It turned out to be the book I wish I had read 10 years earlier.

The Leadership Ecosystem

The fundamental framework of performance enablers
connecting the WHAT to achieve with the HOW to make it happen.

Where development and results are core purposes of leadership, the Leadership Ecosystem helps leaders steer on the enablers for themselves and their teams to perform in the intersection between leadership, teams, and results.

The enablers behind performance require us - as leaders - to make conscious choices during planning and start of initiatives. And to continuously sense the state of the enablers to make adjustments on the fly.

Balancing the enablers around WHAT to achieve and HOW to make it happen is ultimately what shapes progress that ultimately leads to results.

A few words from Morten

The search for answers to two simple questions inspired my mission to simplify leadership:

What is Leadership? How to do it?

With the Leadership Ecosystem, we have condensed the magic of leadership down to the few universal components that shape the difference, the foundation for whatever we lead, in the way we enable results.
